can't burn CD's anymore

Please put up with me...just starting out on a new computer.
Just bought a Sony vaio model pcv-rx560...this came loaded with sonicstage. there was a note in the booklet to only use sonicstage when burning downloaded songs. We did this and the first 2 we made came out great....but then tried and it goes to about 5% done and stops...at that point nothing on sonicstage works and to get it off the screen I've had to shut down the comp and reboot it. Why can't I use another program? or can this be fixed??
