Cant boot xp after unsuccessful dual boot attempt :
Original system: one hard drive with xp home/ ntfs. removed hard drive (mistake I know now) and put in other hard drive and installed Millennium/ fat32. Put both drives back - me/fat32 drive as master and xp home/ntfs as slave. edited boot.ini and did repair of xp. at that time only xp would boot. then edited boot.ini again thinking it didn't know where to look for millennium and i must have changed the setting for location of xp because now i cant get either to boot. Then removed drive with millennium to get xp back - Tried fixboot from recovery console, tried adding original boot.ini, NTLDR and ntdetect.com back to root of xp: no good. How can I replace boot.ini to get xp back? and if I install Millennium to its own (C:) drive will it detect xp on D: and set up dual boot? Thanks for considering this difficult problem.

Dear friend,
My suggestion is attach the HDD with XP as your master then use recovery console to first fix MBR by using FIXMBR and follow it up with BOOTCFG/REBUILD if the XP installation is recognised then an option will be presented to add the installation to BOOT.INI and I hope this will get your boot.ini and hopefully your XP,just let me know if you succeed.then we'll try to do something with your other HDD

Put both HDD's back in the computer, with the WinME drive as the first one. Re-run the ME installation prog. This should restore ME back to working order.
Whilst in ME, put your XP CD in the drive and allow it to auto run. From the menu select install. On the next menu select CLEAN INSTALLATION, not upgrade. On the next menu make sure you select the option to choose the installation drive/partition during setup.
The XP install prog will the copy some files, and configure the dual-boot at that point. It'll then reboot, and it'll take you in to the XP setup program. Either way, ME will now be part of the dual-boot system, but you won't be able to select it until XP setup is finished.
After reboot, when you get to the first menu, select install XP, not repair. Setup will then check you HDD's for previous installations. If your old installation of XP is recoverable, it'll list for you and ask if you want to repair it. Select the repair option and away you go.
