This happend when my anti virus crashed so i switched it off at the mains.
The only button that works is F11 setup but i don't understand any of that, Help please!

well ... use this button and look around in the setup for options like fail safe default or factory default and start from there.

if you're not comfortable with this, i strongly recommend you ring hp tech support and ask them to guide you.

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

F11 is the way to enter/access bios settings... Not the place you need to be looking at at this stage of events.

You switched off at the mains after a virus-util crash... The system is probably corupted in the early stages of the boot-sequence (critical-dile may be les than perfect).

Typically one can run an XP repair routine - to check and repair/replace damaged core files.. But with an HP etc... it's probable that you have recovery CD? Whether or not that CD allows a repair installation; or even access to recovery console???

Pending input from others here more familiar with an HP etc.. perhaps phone HP and outline your istuation; and also seek clarification as to what you can do with whatever recovery CD etc. you may have.

Key item at this stage - don't panic; sit tight and wait for more input here, and also from HP?

And once in again OK... ensure you do have copies of all your important files etc - off the system entirely... That way if you have to run any form of recovery/re-installation that will result in wiping the drive (and thus you would lose all your important files)... you have them safe on CD/DVD etc...

no need to comment here. "Response Number 2" by trvlr seem to have it under control.

Ah, the blinking cursor problem.... I've seen this on a dozen of the 500 HP laptops at my workplace. The MBR (Master Boot Record) had apparently gotten corrupted, and we just copied over the MBR from a good, working laptop.

I don't know the best procedure to recommend in your case. If you have a floppy drive, you could Create DOS boot disk and put MBRTool.exe on it. Its manual describes how to backup, erase, repair the MBR.... I strongly recommend backing up as much as you can before making any changes.

I havn't got the installation disc i was never given one when i bought the comp, i have a double hard drive so i have all my important documents on D: so i shouldn't loose them if i have to reinstall windows, i'll try and boot from a floppy with MBRTool.exe. if that doesn't work i'll try get my hands on a recovery cd.

re' HP recovery disk; contact HP. I seem to recall posts here to the effect that they will send you one for a few £££'s...; possibly even free?

But many would probably advocate you start afresh and get yourself a proper XP CD; then install afresh - or use the repair routine to attempt a repair etc. of existing installation.

If going for a true XP CD then ensure you have either all the drivers etc. for your PC before starting any recovery/repair - ro fresh instalation. If you don't have them (usually on a CD from many suppliers like HP etc...?) then visit the web-site for your model and download them.

If by chance you have compliant OS CD (full version not an upgrade) then you could use an XP upgrade CD as opposed to a full version; the upgrade CD is usually a little cheaper...
