While downloading from the internet, my computer all of a sudden started to shut down and reboot. Now eveytime I start my computer, the bootup to XP fails, with error messages about the FAT32 being corrupted, no signal response on screen and the it reboots again. Safemode etc does not work. Is there anyway fixing the problem without reformating my HD.

You can try to repair your windows XP installation. To do this Boot from the XP CD or you can you use the set of 6 XP startup floppy disks. After everything is loaded from either of these disks, the first or second option offers to repair an existing windows installation.
There might be a better way to fix your problem, so look around before trying this.

That sounds like you picked up a virus. There was one a while back that caused the computer to reboot.
If you have access to another system that has antivirus software, install your drive as a slave in it and run the virus program on it.
