can't boot up in safe mode

Microsoft Windows xp home edition sp2b
January 8, 2010 at 08:18:36
Specs: Windows XP
I suspect I have a virus on this computer. I was told to boot up in safe mode, then run a complete virus scan. I can't boot up in safe mode. I get the blue screen but only have three choices to select from:1. SM-Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 2. 1st floppy drive and 3. PM-maxtor 6y2000PO There is no mention of safe mode. What is wrong?
