Comment:

When I attempt to boot I recieve the message: Missing or corrupt file: C:\windows\system32\config\system
Can anyone tell me if I can extract this file from a cab? What cab? or is there a way to rebuild it. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the reply. The file is actually called system its in the config folder. I found out it is the registry settings for my system files lol. Can't replace em. So I ended up reinstalling with all sorts of problems with my new ram. Long story short... traded ram in computers, formated, installed ME. LOL lots of fun

Very common problem...Do this:
Boot up with your XP cd,
Go to your recovery console, choose your installation (usually 1) then type this exactly:
cd system32\config (press enter)
ren system system.old (enter)
copy c:\windows\repair\system (enter)
Then reboot
no more problems!

i've had the same error, and whenever i tried running the install CD it would give me another error at the "loading windows" dos screen, so what i did is remove one stick of 256mb ram (same ram that i had bought that day) and reboot,... it started without a problem,... plugged the ram in another slot and hmm, well, i haven't gotten the "system corrupt" error anymore, but i seem to have struggles with my ram... :/ anybody know if this is a problem with my ram or a problem with XP ?

Yes Bill, you're awesome. I had this same problem with win2000. The solution worked for me too (except the last line should be replaced with:
copy c:\winnt\repair\system

I am also getting various problems like this. different file names... system, software etc.

What the heck can be causing this???

I am not a happy bunny!

I have made a ghost disk of my hd, so if it does happen I just whack that in. But this isn't the solution. It's obviously a winxp problem.

Anyone got any ideas at all ???

Another factor to throw in the pile: I didn't start having this problem until I installed a windows critical update the night before my computer started throwing up this error. I noticed another thread of a similar error on here about the SOFTWARE file being corrupted people narrowed down to a security update there. Any chance these are related?
