Can't boot into linux on windows xp

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4 intel 2.8ghz
I have a old gateway laptop with windows xp 32bit sp3. I have it setup with ubuntu and trying to install linux mint. My problem is when I try to scroll down to ubuntu or unetbootin I can't hit enter. I won't do anything at that point and I have to restart the laptop. I used to be able to hit enter and run ubuntu with no problems. Is there a way I can make it boot directly to one of those instead of having to select windows xp. Its currently the only one I can boot in by hitting enter. Thanks

What boot loader do you use?

A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.
