Specs: Windows XP
All I want to do is upgrade the users hard driver from 40gb to 60gb drive. The old drive was showing signs of eminent failure. I copied the drive (which had 2 partitions c: and d:) using Acronis but when I restore it it doesn't seem to be booting from the c: partition (but I'm not really sure). I get error unable to find \windows\...

Gateway laptop with default partitions (one is the F11 Restore to factory default partition).

Keep the backups you have made.
Install the original drive. Use acronis to CLONE that drive to another. An external device will be needed to attach the destination drive. USB is easiest.

To use your existing restore to new drive, are the partitions in the correct location with same identification? If not, doing anything will really mess things up. The restore application from OEM's is hard coded. It could toast itself real fast if the partitions are in the wrong location. (That is why I like Clone).

You will need an adapter for 2.5 inch drive to 3.5 inch drive PATA, and the usb adapter to 3.5 inch PATA drive.

Might give this a try... for $25, good rating.
