To specify the default operating system for startup.
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system you want
to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds
you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

To open System, click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click System.
Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > Default Operating System, click on the button under that heading & it should reveal another heading.
To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit.

Or,

1. Click Start > Run
2. In the Open: line type msconfig and click OK to open System Configuration Utility
3. Select the tab labeled BOOT.INI
4. Click the button labeled Check All Boot Paths
5. A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating system locations.
6. Confirm you want to remove the entry and reboot the system.

I'm a bit confused
if I do as u sugest above I remove "D" from boot up which then leaves only 'C' on the boot up menu
mind you it did say the default system appears invalid
then what happens to the dual boot winme/xp
