Can't access files or downloads

Specs: Windows XP
I have been unable for weeks now to access any of the exe files on my computer. Basically I can only access the internet. I can open control panel but once im there, most everything isn't working.

It sounds like you've lost the exe file associations. Download the 'exe file association fix' here:

It's a zip file so if your software to extract zip files isn't working you'll need to extract it on another computer and copy it to the damaged one OR you can download the zip file association fix first--it's a reg file--and install it and then extract the exe file fix.

There some mention there about running regedit from command prompt. You don't need to do that. If you right-click on a .reg file you get MERGE as an added option. That's what you use to incorporate a .reg file into the registry if regedit won't work.

Give that a try and post back.

Hi chelene,

Boot the the computer to safe mode and check if you are able to access the system properly.

Turn on the system and tap F8 for advance boot options. Select safe mode and hit enter.

If the system is working properly in safe mode, perform a system restore using the link mentioned below:

NOTE: System restore will remove the applications installed after the restore point but it does not remove any file.
