OS: Windows Xp pro
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 3.4G/1G
Manufacturer/Model: Dell Optiplex
Comment:

I tried to install matlab in my new machine. However, I got stuck at 15% when the installer was trying to create a folder called 'sys'. After that, I found that I even can't create a folder named as 'sys' anywhere in my computer, but not for "sysa", 'sysb',...,'system', et cetera. I tried to download 'SUBINACL.MSI' and 'reset.cmt' to reset the registry, but that did not sovle the probelm.

Any suggestion?

Thanks,
TG

Interesting on the "sys" folder. I can create one on my PC just fine. Antivirus programs or firewalls quite commonly prevent the creation of certain filenames/directories that are commonly created by viruses (i.e. autorun.inf, sys, setup.exe, etc.). Is it possible that you have some such program preventing this creation?

If you are unsure, check your logs to any such programs, or additionally a good test would be to boot into safe mode and try creating a "sys" folder.

Another possible reason the "sys" folder might not be able to be created is if it ALREADY exists. Do you have hidden and system files/folders viewable? Is it possible there is already a hidden "sys" folder in the directory that you are trying to create it?

Hope that Helps!

Michael

Hi, Michal;

Thanks for your input. I do have symantec installed on my computer. I am not sure if this is the reason for the problem. Could you please explain in detail how I should check this?

I have booted in safe mode, and I was be able to create a folder named as "sys" in that mode. I donot know what this tells me.

Thanks,
TG

Tells you that a process of some sort is preventing the creation of that folder. Which one I would not know for sure. I know that McAfee has some really detailed rules about certain files/dirs being created with specific naming conventions.

You could either try reveiwing Norton's logs or disabling it on your next startup to windows Regular mode and try the creation again. Maybe if you also provided more details as to the exact version of Norton that you have and any options, firewalls, etc. that you have turned on someone else could jump in and help as well.

Additionally you might be able to open task manager and while creating the "sys" folder see what processes jump to the top. One of these should be the culprit process that is preventing the folder creation.

Hope that helps... I wish I could give you more information about Norton, but I am not familiar enough to know what options (if any) in this program might be causing it.

Post back further findings.

Michael

I cannot disable Symantec when I boot the system since I cannot find the option for doing this. What I can do is to diable auto-protect, and this did not help. I am using Symantec Corporation full version 10.0.2.2000 with up to date update installed.

The task manager cann't tell me nothing when I got declined to make a folder "sys".

Anything else I can do?

Thanks,
TG

you can use the Run command and type "misconfig" (without quotes) on the "Startup" tab you can scroll through and uncheck any that apply to Norton and/or Symantec (you can always recheck after you resolve your issue). Additionally go to Administrative Tools > Services and disable any relating to Norton/Symantec as well.

If this doesn't work then you can use the MSCONFIG to disable other start up applications one by one until you find the one that may be preventing this process.

Hope that helps!
