Cannot upgrade win98 to xp

CPU/Ram: 1gb AMD/ 512mb

I'm having trouble upgrading from win98se to winxp pro. I believe that I've ran all the hardware checkers stuff and gotten necessary driver upgrades, but when I try to install xp it hangs up on the screen that set "starting windows". If there's a solution out there to fix this then great. I created a xp bootdisk in case I have to do a fdisk and fresh install of xp but I really would hate to do that if I can avoid it.

I'd really appreciate anyone help with this. I've heard and read about people's frustrations with upgrading to xp before and now I'm starting to see what their talking about. Thanks

do a clean install. you 'll be glad you did.
and format with fat 32 for less problems down the road

Do clean installs only as detailed above. Upgrades are just problems down the road.
