I posted this in the office area as well. With respect to updating Office XP Software, I continually receive an error message regarding the program. I searched all the data base info here on this site and followed instructions in the archived areas of this site on how to clean
upthe registry files to get OfficeXP (albeit I have Office XP Professional SP1) to allow me get the updates or at the very least uninstall and try
again. I was successful in getting the windows installer to allow me to
uninstall and reinstall. Curiously after the reinstall, the windows
installer briefly appears then the application in this case Word opens.
When I go to the office update -- after I cleaned out the reg files;
temporary internet files; history files, etc., it freezes again at 40% and
once again I receive the following error message:
"The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer.
This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:
You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations.
If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You
may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same
problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable. "I cannot get the updates for Office XP Professional SP1 -- no matter what I do... HELP!

Office XP Pro is up to SP2.
Have you tried installing SP2, if you have and cannot, then consider that your's may be a Corporate version designed to be installed and maintained over a network.
This site can give you more info on how to install the updates:
