Cannot system restore earlier than Dec 2010

Specs: Windows XP, 1.998 GHz / 2046 MB
My laptop was a refurb. bought a few months ago. I just now realize that my system restore had been disabled. I don't know whether it was disabled by the seller or by malware since then. All I know is what's now. There's no reinstallation CD, though there is a COA label.

If there's no easy, quick fix for this, I'm ready to give up, because frankly I don't have the stamina to deal with the endless problems of various systems I got anymore. I know nobody will understand this last part cuz it's a long long story beyond the scope of this Q, but trust me, it's true.

P.S. other than this, the laptop is working smoothly, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some malware in it. My point is, I just want to make sure it's clean, so it can be resold.

So what happens when you try to enable System Restore now?
What leads you to suspect malware?
What security and maintenance programs are installed and running?
Antivirus?
Anti-malware?

When you open System Restore > System Restore settings, is there a check mark in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"? If not, when you hit the Settings button on the same Window, has the slider been pulled down too low?

It may be possible to create disks. It may be possible to restore to the OEM state by some F key at boot.

It may be that for a small fee you can buy new media from the OEM maker of the laptop.

Might be a junky laptop but I'd consider getting the original media to recover it. If not I'd be inclined to try linux on it.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

OK:
In System Properties:
...System-Restore Tab:
......there is no checkmark in box adjacent to "turn off sys-restore"
......Disk space to use:
......slider is at maximum (12%)

Here's what displayed (unlike other laptop where SysREstore let me restore to previous months):

Welcome to Sys Restore
Select a restore point
Then there was a calendar
with ONLY the Dec. Calendar
when I tried clicking <
in order to < backward to Nov. or Oct.
...no dice, nada. it remained just Dec 2010

As for Richard's Q:

This system arrived a few months ago with AVG-2007 downloaded, and that's what I'd been using until recently I updated it to AVG-2011.

At the same time, I also downloaded MBAM, which found 3 HKEY's or something like that.
AVG-2011 found nothing of significance except a "warning" back in November, of a corrupted executable file (in Docs & Settings) which it had moved to Virus Vault. Otherwise, my results overview from 11/19 thru 12/9 found 0/0 Spyware & 0/0 Infections.

PLEASE TELL ME WHY WHEN I EDIT MY RESPONSES THEY DISPLAY IN EDIT-FORM (WITH SCROLL BARS AT RIGHT) RATHER THAN IN "ALREADY-POSTED" VERSION.

IT'S CONFUSING, & WHY I DUPLICATED MY POSTS ABOVE!

Please stop shouting. If you have a gripe about the website then contact the webmaster Justin Weber, there's not much respondees can do about it. There is a preview which should show the post as it will appear.

Good bye, since all I got in response is an unjustified accusation.

I just wish I was organized enough to keep track of which online places to avoid in future. Is there any geek board left where people are kind rather than accusatory..

What accusation? If you mean my remark about shouting then you need to be aware that block capitals are always seen that way on the internet. I did not make that rule.

That is not "all you got". You also had response #1 which asked some questions in order to help you further, #2 which gave some guidance on system restore settings, and #3 which gave further advice. My #6 answered your query about the posting features on this website and also gave the name of the webmaster in case that didn't fully cover your query.

I realise that might not have been enough for you but helpers just come and go around here and do this unpaid in their spare time. The amount of help you receive can therefore be varied and it also depends upon whether those who notice a post feel they can help on that specific topic.

We all live on a ball.
