Cannot run in dos mode

I am trying to setup a dual boot XP/ME. I have created the partition on the HD and am now ready to install XP and the ME. However,when I try setup.exe from the directory for the CD ROM which contains the XP disk I get the message " this program cannot run in dos mode" I understand that XP has no dos but how do I get it to load?

You need to boot from the CDROM. Go into the BIOS and set your boot options to boot from the cd rom first. Stick the XP disc in and it will probably ask you to press any button to boot from cdrom.
But, you may want to check around as I think MS recommends installing ME before installing XP.

boot from cd like he said, load ME, then you can run setup of XP inside ME by putting the cd in and letting it autorun.

You can also run the XP installation without booting from the CD. Just go to the folder on the XP CD that is called "i386" and run the file called "winnt.exe"
