Hi Everybody
This is my first post in this forum.
I am not able to run any exe file from within Explorer on my computer.
For example, I download a program file from the internet and when I try and double click on the exe file just downloaded - it complains that Windows cannot run this file. This does not happen on my other older computer at all although it run the same operating system.
I have done some googling and have done as suggested viz to check the registry entry in the following location :-
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
and made sure that is exactly this :-
"%1" %*
Still no success!
Any suggestions to address this issue!
Will reinstalling Windows XP SP2 fix this problem - however,a this point, I cannot take any chances with anything going wrong with this computer since my wife is writing her PhD thesis on it and so it is mission critical!
Thanks in anticipation.
Best regards
Deepak Agarwal

Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

If you can't run the file do the following:
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.Tufenuf

Hi Tufenuf
How do I download that file - there is no way to download it from that link.
If I were to copy the text in to a notepad file, what extension do I give to that file, is it supposed to be a .reg file or an .exe file?
Deepak

Deepak, Use Internet Explorer and right click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" and choose Save target as and save it to your desktop. Then double click it to merge it into your registry. It is a .reg file.
