changing the extension is not the same thing as renaming the file. Typically rename of the file only deals with what is to the left of the period not to the right.

Do you understand why you get this message when you change the extension?

Yes, you are probably doing something like this:

oldfile.mp3
newfile

The extension (mp3) gets lost. What you should be doing is this:

oldfile.mp3
newfile.mp3

Only change what is to the left of the dot, as wanderer says.

some other bloke...
