Specs: Windows XP
I have a Compaq NX6110 that I cannot get Windows xp home to reinstall on.
I have reset the bios to default.
I have tried using a windows xp home (genuine) CD.
I have tried using a set of windows xp home floppy discs (I switched the bios to see floppy first... and switched it to see optical drive first, after)
I have tried an XP Pro cd (just to see if it would boot from it (no go)
It was telling me no disc was found, till I took the HDD out, popped it into one of my external cases and reformatted it in there... now, I just get a dashing little white line.
Can anyone help me?

Have you set the Boot priority process on the Bios to boot from the Cdrom as primary?

Is there an error message during the install process? What do you mean with this?

"I have tried an XP Pro cd (just to see if it would boot from it (no go)
It was telling me no disc was found, till I took the HDD out, popped it into one of my external cases and reformatted it in there... now, I just get a dashing little white line"

Were you expecting a desktop with the XP CD? Reformatting externally is not needed since the install process will format and prep the drive.

Do you have the recovery disks for the system? Setting the BIOS to default can cause install problems on systems that are designed for Vista. Some have a setting for AHCI mode that prevents an XP intall. In order to continue the hard drive access needs to be set to IDE or compatibility mode to continue the install. Using the recovery disk for XP gets around that problem since it bypasses the AHCI problem.

vanilla

As was suggested above you need to enter the BIOS (setup) screens and change the boot order to set the CD drive BEFORE the hard drive.

The message you received indicates you were booting to the hard drive, which is no longer bootable because you wiped it.

You also need to watch the screens for a message to hit any key to boot from the CD. Hit the space bar when you see that message.

On most Compaq laptops the boot order can be changed by pressing the ESC key during boot. Down in the bottom left a message should show when the logo starts stating:

Press ESC to change the boot order
Press F10 to enter SETUP

No matter what you have set as the primary boot order it can be modified without resetting the BIOS.
