cannot reinstall HP 3440C scanner - cannot initialize

Hewlett-packard / Scanjet 3440c
August 1, 2012 at 08:21:18
Specs: Windows XP, Pentium D 5150/E510/1G
Today - trying again to install HP Scanjet 3400C - message: 'fatal error. setup is unable to continue'. This is our old, very good scanner, which we uninstalled when purchased our new printer/scanner - big mistake. Now trying to re-install the HP Scanjet 3400C utilizing available program/updates, etc from the HP website.

Tried yesterday, and everything went fine until we plugged in the scanner and turned it on. Then we got this message - 'Sorry, scanner could not be initialized'.

Computer is Dell Dimension E510, Windows XP

Thank you for any help. We love this scanner and very much want it back in use!

XP was pretty good but still suffered some issues. I am sure we will find W7 will be bad but not as much. The issue may be that when you install a second device there are settings and files that may be locked or override the old scanner. It is difficult to tell. You might look at event logs for clues.

If this is a somewhat recent change you might consider a restore point to a time before the old scanner.

Personally I end up reloading the entire OS from OEM media and start all over. I know it is a pain but ends up being faster and gets rid of any malware. Be sure to install all service packs, a good security suite such as MS security essentials or other. Be sure to only use limited users for all tasks and put a long passphrase in the admin password.
