I am having trouble reformating my hard drive. I have restarted my computer so that it will boot from CD but all i get is an error saying cannot find NTLDR and then it loads Windows. I have changed my settings to boot from CD first and it still comes up with this message. All i am trying to do is reformat my hard drive and i am all out of ideas. Can someone please help.

reset the cmos to factory defaults in bios, or by the jumper on the motherboard, or, by pulling the motherboard battery out for a few hours

You may need to hit "any key" when prompted to boot from the CD. If you are not offered this option then you don't have the boot order set correctly. If you ARE offered this option but it doesn't appear to work then you may have a bad drive or a bad disk.

Not sure, but maybe you need the 6 floppies to be able to access the CD ??

A couple of obvious canditates to try and discount first.

1. Dirty CD? Have you tried another CD?

2. CDROM drive hardware / laser error? unable to read CD possibly? Have you tried a different CDROM drive?

3. If you do not care whether the drive is formatted NTFS or FAT32, then you could try using a win98 boot floppy and fdisk and format HDD as FAT32.

If the CD is bad formatting the hard drive from a floppy won't help. The primary repair is to get the CD drive readable, the fact that changing the boot, and still not seeing the drive leads to suspecting the drive is bad.

I have changed the boot sequence a number of times to try different combinations. No joy. I tried the CD when the PC has started and it works fine which eliminates the bad CD or DVDrom. And The computer doesn't give me any option to boot from CD, it only says Couldn't find NTLDR. I am very thankfull that everyone is helping with this problem but i am still unable to format. Any more ideas

When you first start the computer with the CD in place there are some informational screens with hardware and drive information. Then if there is a Bootable CD in any of your optical drives you should see a screen instructing you to hit any key to boot from CD. If other disks function in your CD drive then the WinXP CD is defective, or you are missing the message. Is the WinXP CD an original disk or a backup copy?

Many add in controller cards DO NOT support ATAPI devices (CD/DVD). If this is the case then there is nothing to do except move the optical drive to a MBoard controller.
