cannot re-format disc D XP

Specs: Windows XP
I have two windows XP installation running on start up,
I am trying to delete one of them by right clicking drive D and then clicking
FORMAT it tells me I have to Quit any open programmes running on D drive.
To my knowledge nothing is running on this drive.
How can I overcome this prroblem?

... are you sure you have two can you access both windows?

... are you sure its not just another entry in the boot.ini file?

... click "start" run (type) diskmgmt.msc [press enter]

... how many partitions? do you see? right click "explore" is it the same drive?

... how many drives do you see?

... in "run" (type) C:\boot.ini [press enter]

Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and click the Resource Monitor button. When Resource Monitor opens got to the Disk tab and have a look at Disk Activity. See if it lists any active files on the D: drive.

If this doesn't work, come back and tell us. There are more powerful utilities available that will allow you to monitor every access to a file.
