To make a long story short, somehow, someway all the files associated with my genealogy information have picked up a PSP file extension when I transferred them to my new computer. I have no idea how this happened as everything was made using The Print Shop or Word.

I get a message unsupported format or unable to read. I have tried Adobe, MGI, Print Shop, (on which they were made) Paint, Acrobat, Word and a friend's Paint Shop Pro. Not a single program will open them.

How can I open PSP files and then convert to JPEG which opens on anything?

make a copy of one of the files so that you can experiment with it. For instance...if you have "1234.psp", right click on it, select copy, then paste it back into the same folder. It will then be called "copy of 1234.psp". Rename it "1234.XXX", where XXX = file extension used by Print Shop (ignore the warning about changing the file extension), then see if you can open it

Hi

I just tried that but it still won't open because even after renaming the words PSP File remains, but in a gray mode. If I could get that removed when changing the extension that might solve the problem. Any suggestions?

Try irfanview. You may need a plugin. It's free.

Hi

Unbelivably I also downloaded that last week because it said it read psp files, but it came up with the same answer of cannot read - unsupported format. I even checked the file extension for psp but still nothing, unless I am not doing something else I should. Sorry I didn't mention that in my original post but thanks for trying to help.

Hi pricy.

I believe you have to download a plugin for PSP.

Do you know which plug in? Specific name? In the plug in folder of Irfan View I see an Adobe8BF.

Hi pricy,

Just go to Plugins and download the whole file. That's all I did and it worked fine.

Hi - and thanks for your patience and trying to help, but....

Blast! I did that and then installed them into the plug ins folder, but they still won't open. I still get the box that says unsupported or unknown format and even cannot read header, whatever that means!

Do you or anyone else know if there is something else I should do? File associations, rename, etc in this viewer to get it to recognize PSP which it says it can read but doesn't. :-(

Would you want to send me a file and I will see if I can open it for you, or at least give it a try?

Boy how to feel stupid in one easy lesson. Now I get an error message that I have to be coming from computing.net, which I thought I was. But not to worry, I get it even on my own name! :-) Is it not good to put it in the body of the email?

Guess you will have to contact me?

Simple... open the .psp file in Paint Shop Pro, select "Save As" in the File drop down box and the in File Types select .jpg or .bmp or whatever you want to save it as. The programme will do the conversion for you.

You will of course need to have Paint Shop installed on your system.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

I had the same problem. IrfanView worked for me, but I had to install the pluggins.
