I have never seen this before. I just bought Norton Antivirus 2006. I had Mcaffee installed on my PC. I deleted Mcaffee, and began installing Norton. Halfway through the install, I got an error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel."

It then rebooted itself, and when it came back up, all of my icons on the desktop now have the generic "unassociated" Microsoft icon. I cannot click on them, or I get the above error message. If I right-click on them, I get these options:
Cut
Copy
create shortcut
delete
rename
properties

I have tried doing a system restore, but I cannot access it through Accessories/System Tools (Blank icon, same error message).
I rebooted in safe-mode, and safe mode with prompt (using %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe), and everytime I get System restore to come up, I get a blank white screen with no options.
I did an exhaustive search for a fix, and there are lots of them, but they all say to download a fix. I can access the internet (My I.E. browser is the only icon I can use), but when I download something, if I save it to desktop, I cannot open it (see error message above), and if I choose to run it instead of saving it, I still get the same error.

What is going on?
One more major problem:
I cannot find my XP CD.

Can anybody wave their magic wand and be a hero??

Thanks!

Cut your loss & run, there's tons of more reliable and less invasive AV tools out there.

For now run system restore & revert your system prior to a state before this mishap, then get rid of the NAV disc forever.

I vote for the "Get rid of the NAV disk forever"! I cannot use norton 2006 and regret buying it.

Good gosh man...yes, throw the Norton disk as far as you can; preferably into a river somewhere.

There are some darn good free ones. I am very pleased with the free antivirus by AVG.

DOC, What are the file extensions of the items you downloaded and programs that you can not open or run? There are file extension fixes at the link below.

not very popular, good old norton av, huh? :-)

replacing mcafee with nav is like fighting fire with gasoline.

you might as well backup your data and go for a nice clean installation.
