Cannot Login - Asking for Domain!?!
Name: XBL4DE Date: October 20, 2005 at 02:46:59 Pacific OS: Win XP Home CPU/Ram: P4 2G, 512Mb
Comment:
I've got a client whose Dell PC with HP Home has, for the 2nd time, got an error where it is impossible to login. It says something like domain is unavailable etc, but it is a single pc with no network requirements. I have seen this also happen on someone else's pc, but I have only been able to repair through formatting. Any ideas? I'd sure appreciate knowing what on earth is going wrong.

Boot into Safe Mode and confirm that all network settings/userids/passwords are correct.

i've had the same problem many times....the last time I had this problem I obtained a copy of an XP password recovery tool....let me know if you need to know which one....
then I booted to it....unlocked and reset the administrator password...(this will NOT reset the domain admin password) just the local admin password. THen boot to safe mode or regular mode and change the domain from whatever domain name to the local computer and type administrator with a blank password.
oh...when you reset the password with the tool...set it to blank...the option is * instead of typing a password.

hmmm... trying to reset the password, but its asking for the old password which is blank, so it doesn't look like this method will work either

Are you sure it is XP Home because XP Home does not have the ability to join a domain?

Bryan, yes you are correct but incorrect at the same time. let me explain.
microsoft designed xp home so that it does NOT have the abaility to join a domin...however there are "powertoys" out there that will allow you to install and then join a domain. i've done it once to a home install (at an office) that was supposed to be pro but I had to get her by for the weekend before I could upgrade to pro and so I found the utility and it worked very well when adding her to the domin. i later went and upgrade to pro.

I am having this same problem with a fresh install of Home XP on a freshly formatted drive. I don't have any power tools installed and have installed XP hundreds of times without this happening. This PC had Millennium on it before the reformat/install of a new copy of XP Home (right out of the packaging). Anybody have a clue what causes this?
Summary: I have a weird situation here. I know that XP home is unable to join NT domain, & it's a bit tricky for XPhome to coomunicate with Exchange & NT shared folder without joining NT domain. So I create NT...
