Our hard drive recently starting rebooting by itself. We removed the drive and installed a new one. The drive is recognized in BIOS. The drive shows a NTFS partition but XP does not load. Keep Getting different errors, currently Stop Error: 0X0000008E. When I try to use the recovery option on the CD I do not see the c:\windows directory. Any suggestions. This is new Western Digital 80GB drive.

You can not use the recovery cd on a new drive. The recovery cd is not an install disk.

You installed a new drive. Did you then install Windows XP on the drive? Is that the one that's failing and you're then attempting to run the Recovery CD? If you're then using an HP Recovery CD, it doesn't matter what's on the machine. Are you using this CD to restore the drive to the original Factory settings? Because that's what it's for.
Or...do you mean you're attempting to run the Recovery Console from the XP Installation CD?
Chopper-I think you may be right on. If it is a recovery disk that depends on a hidden partition with the O/S on it and you swap the hdd the info for the O/S is gone.

Contact Gateway on the procedure to install a new hard drive. There is probably a utility that you have to run to prepare the drive.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP! Sorry, I do not check for private messages

It seems that alot of computers come with recovery software right on the hard drive - not handy if the hard drive crashes.
