Well My desktop has been funtioning essentialy fine since I put it together... I have had intermittent crashes due to "device driver" that I attribute to the ATI 9600 Radeon, but besides that I am happy with the system... Well I believe I crashed due to this driver again and it began to reboot as it has done in the past... However in this instance it came to a screeching halt w/ the above message, "Cannot load DOS, press any key to reboot/retry" I've tried googling it but have had no luck... I dont have the winXP Cd infront of me but will have access to one tomorrow... Any help you could lend me would be greatly appreciated as I am freaking out over here...

so what were you doing to make it crash?
IN THE MATTERS OF STYLE,

in matters of principle,
STAND LIKE A ROCK

It happens pretty much at random, in this instance I was using Dr. Divx to encode Video, was surfing the internet in two firefox windows, playing w/ an Excel spreadsheet, and downloading with ABC (Yet Another BitTorrent Client)... I know its alot but thats the norm when I am sitting in front of the PC
I didn't mention it but the XP Sp2 I am running is the Pro edition

If you're getting a "can't load DOS" msg, first check to see if there's a floppy in the drive.
If not, I don't see where that msg would come from.
Was this HD set up to multi-boot DOS and XP?

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

M2 Thanks,
turns out it was a brain fart and there was a disk in the floopy, the second fo two Partition Magic I created to help a freind with her laptop...
So I am able to semi-boot windows.. I am now being halted on the Blue Welcome to Windows screen and being informed of 3 "Delayed Write Failures" being: C:\$Mft, C:\., and D:\$Mft... These are partitions on the same drive... I've looked over the M$FT Knowledge base, but there seems to be little useful info there as to how I can actually get it to boot... Will this be something I can rectify when I get a XP disk tomorrow??

I'm with Mechanix2Go, not a message I have ever seen (and believe me i've seen a few !) nor the sort of message I would expect XP to throw up.
Can you F8 into safe mode ?

Delayed write failure is a hard drive issue. I have read of some people installing or re-installing disk controller drivers and recovering but usually the drive had given up the ghost.

Sorry I haven't replied recently.. I gave up and had a partition formatted and reinstalled XP... I am probably going to forgo SP2 for now (or until they fix some of the bugs)... but now cannot access any of the files that were created under the previous XP Sp2 install... I will post another thread as this is likely an unrelated issue.. :(
