Hi,

I cannot install or uninstall most software programs on my computer. I first noticed the problem 4 weeks ago when trying to install the new windows messenger 7.0.

Since then, I've tried installing: nero, photoshop cs2, i-ntues, and snag-it with no luck. I suspect it is a problem within my registry but not positive. I have registry mechanics and ran it serveral times but no luck.

I heard it could also be a recent driver installed thats causing the problem.

I also tried system restore to earlier time but it doesn't work.

Could this be a virus? I've run virus scan twice in the last week but no viruses.
On most instances, the installation gets to 99% throuh the installation process and then rewinds at the last step and says "a fatal error has occured."

Please help me!

Justin

What happens when you attempt to install/uninstall? Are you trying this with a limited privileges account? Have you tried installing or uninstalling in Safe Mode?

Per: I have service pack 2 installed which already includes the 3.0 installer.

Jennfier: The installations go to 99% and then rolls back with a message saying fatal error occured, please try again later.

I only have one account and thats owner.

No I have not tried safe mode yet but thats because it doesn't solve my problem for future install/uninstalls.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Justin

Check in your Add/Remove Programs list and see what version of the Windows Installer you have.

Per: I was close to using the installer cleanup utility until I ran into this warning:
"Continuing further will make permanent changes to your system. You may need to reinstall some or all applications on your system that used the Windows Installer technology to be installed. If you do not want to proceed, please press the 'Exit' button now. Choosing 'Remove' will make the permanent changes."

What are the chances I may have to reinstall some or all of the applications? Is this installer the solution to my problems? I'll give it a shot if you think this is the fix.

Jennifer: I'm using version 3.1

Thanks guys!
