Cannot install Programs. Win16 erro

I keep coming across a problem when trying to install various programs. "THE WIN 16 SUBSYSTEM WAS NOT ABLE TO ENTER PROTECTED MODE. DOSX.exe MUST BE IN YOUR AUTOEXEC.NT AND PRESENT IN YOUR PATH" Some one please help!!! I am getting frustrated.. I even tried installing a program (a driver update) in safe mode to make sure nothing extra was loaded, but still failed
