the computer will not get passed the windows logo page and is continually in chkdsk mode, tried going into advanced menu, tried safe mode, best last etc, still ended up with chkdsk. Eventually got stop:c0000135 component not found, user32.dll not found. I think the virus has corrupted the registry but I cannot get into windows to try anything. Any help, suggestions really appreciated

Try pressing any key to stop it from running and see if the system will actually boot up.
Have you tried booting from the winxp disk and doing a repair yet ?
There is an article at...

Don't know if it will work after a virus attack though.

thanks for the swift reply,I have tried hitting a key which stops chkdsk but the splash screen for the motherboard comes up and then after a long wait the xp screen appears the one with the blue flashing line and after another long wait chkdsk comes back
the winxp disk seems to be the only solution I just hope I can do a repair and not lose everything by having to do a full reinstall

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

well bad just got worst, the repair seemed to be going well and the repair said it had 39 minutes to go when everything went blank and stayed blank. I rebooted but now I cannot get back to repair, eventually I get the windows splash screen, ominously the blue flashing line is now green and at the end I get a blank screen with a cursor that moves and does nothing else, I can get to apoint where it says reinstall but then I am faced with 3 partitions and I have no idea which one to use, one is about 30 gig, another about 27 and says my documents and the third is 8 meg, It looks like a full reinstall is required as the old o/s has vanished, help please

Are you sure you have a virus? The green bar on the splash screen shows its an XP Home disc. XP Professional had the blue bars until the addition of SP2, when both editions have the blue bar.
The first partition shown would normally be the Windows one (original one)if you try to install over an existing Windows installation, you will get a warning telling you so, you can then go back and use another partition. Don't even try to use the 8 meg one! If all else fails and if you need to, delete all partitions, and start afresh. If you use decent AV software, a virus would be my last suspect. Hardware failure, memory or HDD would be my main suspects.Computers... designed to entertain, help with work but most of all to frustrate you!

In the end the repair refused to work so I did a reinstall, but now I have another problem. When I tried to reinstall the software for the broadband, I am told that an ethernet card cannot be detected even though before the virus it worked fine, I tried usb but it refuses to finalise the installation of the software, once again please anybody got any ideas thanks
