Comment:

I recently got a router. I installed the router and everything, both computers are working fine with the Internet, but I cannot get the computers to connect to one-another via a home network. I just want to share the printer, I ran network setup wizard 5 times on each computer, and it still isn't working.

Does anyone have a clue on what I am doing wrong?

Are you not seeing any of the computers through network neighbourhood?

If not then you'll need to set WINS on one all of the computers to one of the ip addresses on your network.

e.g.

COMP1 - IP Address 192.168.0.1
COMP2 - IP Address 192.168.0.2
COMP3 - IP Address 192.168.0.3

Set WINS settings on all computers to 192.168.0.1

I have a WINDOWS 2000 Server running Active Directories with an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and have set WINS to 192.168.0.1.

On the other 2 workstations I have set IP Addresses to 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 and have set WINS to 192.168.0.1

I can see all computers, share files and printers etc.

Hope this helps

Rory.

Its a WINS problem do what I said and should be fine.

If your able to connect to the internet from all computers then you know you have good working network links.

You'll have to set DNS settings of your ISP in the network properties too.

Change computer one network properties to:

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.0.1
SUBNET MASK: 192.168.0.1
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 1.1.1.1 <- replace with your DNS settings from your ISP

WINS: 192.168.0.1

Change Computer two network properties to:

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.0.2
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 1.1.1.1

WINS: 192.168.0.1

You will now be able to see computers in network neighbourbood.

Click OK

Type IPCONFIG /ALL [press enter] your DNS settings should be listed there.

Can you browse internet and see all computers now?

Make sure you have exact usernames and passwords on all of your computers. You may not have permission to use the shared printer. Note error messages.

I'm no wizard on this, but I too have a Linksys router. When I was running XP SP1, I had to disable XP firewall in order to share files and printers. When I installed SP2, this was no longer necessary, and my home networking has worked perfectly ever since.

You need to make sure that you duplicate all username and passwords on all computers.

e.g.

Computer 1:

Username: Administrator
Password: password

and

Username: Boris
Password: password

You must ensure that all usernames and passwords are the same on all computers. So on computer you would create Boris with password of password and ensure administrator password is password too.

Do this and everything will work

Nope, already duplicated, and it still doesn't work. It is only my first computer that cannot be accessed. The other one is fine

You do NOT need same user name or passwords on two XP machines if simple file sharing is enabled in the folder options. It is enabled by default. Do you have the firewall on the first computer on?
The default ip address of a linksys router is 192.168.1.1 . If you set a static address for each computer(which you don't have to do, you can use dhcp) the addresses should be between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254. The dns server and gateway should be 192.168.1.1. You can set this by going to the network connection then right click it and press properties then when the properties box opens double click the Internet Protocol(tcp/ip).
If you have your firewall off and simple file sharing checked and you have a shared resource on the computer you should be able to get to it. One other thing, did you go to services.msc and disable some services that would prevent you from sharing it?
