Cannot find shell.dll

Comment:
When I attempt to run an application that has been working fine suddenly I get the message "Cannot find shell.dll" When I close it I get a message that the application will not run.
A search shows shell.dll present in C;\Windows\System. Is that the proper place for it or should it be in C:\Windows\System32?
I know this has come up before, but I would like to know the latest fix on this before I start doing anything.

I have it in both system and system32. Try copying it (instead of moving) to system32. If you're still getting the error message, try start>run and typing in:
regsvr32 shell.dll

I too have it in both. They appear to be identical files.

I copied shell.dll from Windows\System to Windows\System32 and the program ran immediately.
Evidently some Trojan/Virus must have deleted it and the path specified Windows\System32.
Many thanks to both of you who replied so promptly..........Neil
