I setup a few folders to be shared and I also went through the WinXP Network Setup Wizard utility which supposedly setup my computer for filesharing. However, when I type in the IP address (\\192.168.1.100) (DHCP through Linksys WRT54G router), I get a prompt for user-name and password, but when I enter these, I get an error message saying that the computer is not accessible. It claims that I might not have permission to access the computer. However, the computer has no password and I entered the username correctly. What must I do to access files remotely from this computer? When I say remotely, I mean over the Linksys Router as in both computer connected to it directly. So LAN filesharing is what I want. I was able to do this before I upgraded my router, although I reinstalled the OS since then.

Do you have simplified sharing enabled on either or both computers? If it is, you don't need any user validation. If its not, then you should use a username with a non-null password.
Both in same workgroup (not so important, but..)
Personally I NEVER use the network wizard - it always seems to create problems - just go to sharing and say you just want to enable sharing.
also check the firewall settings - when you create a share it should set file sharing to allowed in windows firewall (if you're using a 3rd party firewall, check its config - eg, I know norton prohibits LAN connections by default)

Thanks Steve for your response. Under My Computer -> Folder Options -> View tab, I have the Use Simple Sharing Option enabled. So I believe that I am using simplified sharing if this is what you are referring to.
I first tried to enable sharing by going to the folder that I wanted to share, right clicking on it, and selecting the share option such that the "hand" icon appears under the folder. I am using the Windows XP default firewall which is behind the hardware firewall of my Linksys WRT54G router. At first, I was thinking that my router is not configured properly, but since I was able to get to the logon prompt, I think my router is ok and some setting needs to be changed on my PC. I would not be surprised if M$ encountered too many exploits surrounding their sharing protocol and decided to kill all filesharing in SP2 without bothering to change any of the menus :-).

Are you using a firewall?
I use zonealarm pro myself and in order for me to view my XP machines I have to place my local network in the firewall in the trusted zone.
I had originally placed it in the internet zone and in that case the firewall is much more strict and does not allow access to other machines.
So if you are using a firewall, place your local network in the trusted zone and you should be able to see all the machines on your local network that have filesharing enabled.

Try to disable Simple Sharing Option and check out the Security tab of the folders' properties. You need the user ‘guest’ to be in the list. If it is absent, you need to add this user.
Frankly, I had this problem before but I actually can't remember how I solved it!:)
If the first idea don't work, try also to manage Control panel - administration – services. Try to turn on\off all process that are responsible for network and local policy. Maybe it is the solution.

DON'T do anything with the Guest account. Leave it disabled and don't add it to any security. Its just a security hole if you use it
What I was trying to say at the top is I've never had any trouble file sharing with XP. And all I do is access the sharing tab and elect to just enable sharing, then add sharename - not using the wizard. I prefer to disable simplified sharing - which just means you get a username/password prompt when you try to access a share (and you can save the details you put in, so only need to do it once).
Most problems I've seen otherwise (ie, on other people's networks) are down to firewall settings. sometimes for some reason, the windows firewall doesn't get the file & printer sharing box ticked in the exceptions - in this case you just need to tick it yourself.
I'd just check that both machines are set up the same way (either simplified sharing or not, with at least one resource - drive, folder, printer - shared on each machine), in the same workgroup.
