I've got a Plextor 12/10/32A CD-Writer and a Quantum Fireball HDD, both are IDE. For some reason I cannot get WinXP to run both devices in DMA mode :-(
My motherboard is an Intel BXPro 747M with SiS Master Bus Controller
Here is what I've done so far....
a. Enabled "DMA if available" in control panel for both devices. - Still runs in PIO mode.
b. Edited my registry to force DMA mode - Still runs in PIO mode.
c. Downloaded the latest SiS drivers (although they do not claim to be Win2k or WinXP compatible)
Does anyone out there have a similar setup and has managed to get DMA running??
ATM my CPU usage jumps up to about 95% when accessing the drives and burning a 74min CDR takes longer than it used to take with my old 2X burner!!

My quantum fireball is seen as UDMA5. However, to get my TDK24x to be seen as anything other than PIO, I had to set my bios to 'none' and let winxp set the writer up as multi-word udma2. note: this may not be necessary, as my tdk burns fine in PIO mode now...
also, try to seperate your hdd from cd/dvd roms...
i also had to quit using nero to write cd's. i now use ezcd5.02 and fb (cuz i was having the same prob 24x burn = 15 min if it didn't crash)
Good Luck !!!!!

Thanks for the prompt reply :-)
I can burn no problems with Nero, CDRWin, Prassi, CloneCD, Fireburner, it's just that they burn very slow :-(
Just as well my drive is BurnProof! :-)
It is definately (I think) a Master Bus Controller issue, I've changed every possible setting in my BIOS I've even f---ed around with the Registry trying to force DMA - no luck :-(
The most up-to-date BMC driver on the SiS site is dated 1999!!!, LOL
Oh WHY am I laughing!!!?? ;-)
Witchy2k1.

i have 2 hdds on primary & cd & cdrw on secondary
hdds are udma5
cds are udma2
everything works well with all burning progs

I don't have any issues with any software, it's the actual performance of the drives.
I'm certain that my BMC drivers aren't compatible.

How about cables?
do u have separate cable for HD and CDRW drive? if u use one cable for both HD and CDRW, than that where is the problem!

I have 2 IDE channels, each drive is connected to a seperate channels and both are set as master.Witchy2k1.

Witchy2k1,
Have you found a solution to your problems with enabling DMA in Windows XP? I too have a SIS chipset (Sis 620), and have also wrestled with different configurations and registry and whatnot... and have come up with no progress. Very frustrated. Have you solved the problem?

Same problem I'm experiencing.... SIS 620 chip.... cannot enable the dma... followed some other peoples responses as to updating the bios then run the w2kudma.exe file... still no work. Computer runs so slow. Most likely the w2kudma is not compatible with XP... has anyone had this problem and resolved it in windows 2000?

I have the same problem, also tried everything , i think the only hope is that SIS comes with a new driver I also have an M748MR with a SIS620 chip.
If anyone now the solution pls let me know .Thanks and good luck!!
