I've ran into a problem, and tried searching but couldn't find an exact match. Here's the situation:
XP SP1 is installed on a 4GB partition (C:), and is dedicated to OS files only (user profiles, windows directory and a few OS critical programs). Everything else is installed on another partition (D:). I've already disabled hibernation and set system recovery to a good size.
Now lately, the "low disc space" message has been coming up. Disc cleanup will not clean out the bulk data. Searching for all the data, I found that over 860MB lies in "Temporary Internet Files" under my current user profile. Disc Cleanup shows 0KB in that category, but when I click on properties on that folder, I get 6 folders and 197 files. But when I explore into this file, I see nothing (cause I've tried deleting everything). Hidden files are set to be shown as well as OS files and folders. I don't even use IE (Mozilla fan).
I've tried del*.* at the command prompt as well, and am unable to delete the entire 'temporary internet files' folders due to a message saying it is require by the OS. I've tried clearing these files through IE, Disc Cleanup, and they aren't disapearing. I've tried viewing them through IE options, choosing the view file option. I do use Norton System Works and have made sure to delete all protected files as well... It's just 860+MB wasting disc space.
Any ideas?
Thanks you much. Marc

Sounds like your Index.dat file may need cleaning. The index.dat file can't be deleted from IE but you can clear it by downloading Spider or Tracks Eraser which you can find on Google.
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies.
Safe mode didn't work, and I fixed the problem myself. I went into Linux (my dual boot) and tried to see if I could see more files there. My Content.IE5 folder in 'temporary internet files' was holding the 860MB of information. I was able to sucessfully delete the content.
But is there way to delete it through windows, or rather force windows to show the Content.IE5 folder? While I can navigate to it through the command line, I'd like to be able to see it in explorer.
Thanks for the above help as well
Marc

Hiya mate, iv had the same problem myself (bout 200Mb). There IS a way to force windows to show it.
Check this out...
Just open a program like 'PhotoDraw', then navigate to your Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content. IE5 Folder.
Now...you cant delete the actual contents of the folder by simply trying to delete Content. IE5, as Windows wont like this. Instead, go into and the file (still in Photodraw), and you will be greated with your pleathora of funny named Temp files. Simply select all of them and 'Delete'.
You will be asked, upon confirmation of delete from recycle bin, whether you wish to delete a system file. Just hit 'Yes to All'.
You will notice that Content. IE5 remains, but the folder is miniscule compared to previous. Hence, you have sucessfully cleared the junk out.
Good Luck, email me if you have any queries/need directions.
Damo.
