cannot delete an AVI file

Comment:
I created an avi file using rendersoft cam studio but during the process something went wrong with the AVI file (WMP icon) so I tried to delete it. Every time I try to do this it says I can’t delete it and it comes up with the error "cannot delete it is being used by another person or program" I tried to reboot in safe mode and delete it but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Try to right click on the file and change the extension to AVI. Hope this helps.

this has to do with the winxp native inbuilt avi bitrate determiner (properties tab). to fix the issue: open the avi file in a hex editor, delete a part of it, windows won't notice that it's an avi file and will release it, then you can delete it
delete the avi bitrate determiner (one of the subkeys under "avifile" in the registry, can't remember the exact name)
boot into repair console dos mode, delete the file from there: del name.extension
