Do you have enough free space on your HD? If so, try System Restore going back to the time before this occurred. Please post back if this does not help.
I have 27 gigs free.....I tried the SFC /SCANNOW task with the xp cd in the tray and nothing happened except i got a really fast DOS window that appeared for .4 of a second.....
Next step would be a system repair. Boot from the cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation and let it run. You will need the CD key. You won't lose any data except all the XP updates. You will have to reinstall them, including SP1a. Do that immediately as you will be susceptable to the msblaster and sasser worms.
