cannot connect to LAN

Specs: Windows XP
i am trying to setup a local area network, but when i plugged in my ethernet cable, it didn't automatically detect it. i am running windows xp, have the nessicary hardware as far as i can tell. under network connections, i currently have nothing. i tried adding one, but there is no option for LAN.

Are you connecting to a router?
And if so, when you plug in the ethernet cable from the computer into one of the ethernet ports, is there a LED flashing?

Also check, whether the network card is shown correctly in the device manager.

alright, i got it fixed, i needed to install the driver for my hardware, stupid me.
