heres what happened- i was downloading a file and about halfway thru our power went out. when i restarted my computer it was completely messed up. i could not do anything. i had to wipe clean my hard drive and reinstall everything. it seemed like everything was ok until i tried to download my virus scan and other things i had on my computer. i now cannot complete any download. it will only go about half way and say it is complete which it isn't. any ideas on what might have happened or how i can fix it? thanks!

Wow, first, I recommend getting battery backup - prices are cheap (around $50 for a decent home one that will let you get the system shut down properly!).
How do you connect to the internet - dial up, dsl, cable? Are you behind a router?

" i had to wipe clean my hard drive and reinstall everything."
Dell's usually come with some way of restoring it to it's factory settings.
Mine is hit Alt+F11 when the www.dell.com screen appears during bootup.
Perhaps yours has a method too. Check the Dell site under manuals for your model.

i did the restore to factory settings but it did not help. i cannot download my virus scan or ad-aware or anything like this. i really need help!

mountain momma9, how do you connect to the internet - dial up, dsl, cable? Are you behind a router?
It sounds like your isp may be disconnecting you. But, it would be nice to know what kind of connection you are using and if you are behind a router.

i connect by dial up and not behind a router. the computer does not disconnect it just will not complete the download.

I wonder if you dial-up settings need to be configured so that the isp doesn't drop your connection after so much time? I have heard where people were trying to download, but had to open another web page that refreshes often to "fool" the isp connection into thinking that it was active.

i don't think thats it. i usually stay on while its downloading and check on things. i have been able to download updates and limewire and some small files but none of my security files or scans like ad-aware or virus scans.

Well, my recommendation until you get this problem solved is to stay off of programs like limewire - you DON'T need to be doing any file sharing when you can't keep your computer secure.

As for what's going on, I am not sure. The next step I would do is to scan for nasties on the computer.
See if you can do the online scan at the Symantec website, and download Ad-Adaware and Spybot Search&Destroy. The latter two would be to search for nasties on your computer. Download the Spybot and run it, saving a log file, but don't delete anything yet because you might delete something you actually need.
Here's the links:
Free Virus scan - Symantec.com
http://security.symantec.com/Ad-Aware SE Personal (free version)
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad...Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 (free version)
copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar. When you reach the page, scroll down to the "Download" section and select to download the Spybot -Search & Destroy 1.4.
