Did anyone see that video a few weeks ago where the guy was on with AOL Tech Support attempting to cancel his AOL account? Very intersting...

Leonard, call them and cancel.

FYI: Cancelling your account does not terminate the aol email address - you can not do that.

After cancelling aol, they keep your email address alive. If you are successful in getting rid of this post back and let us know. If all else fails, you could log on to the account, go to setting and choose to block all mail.

Here's a good one...I have a client that's been on aol since the beginning dialup--Big $'s, I put her on DSL, anyways, she WANTS to keep her email address as she has a business. She can keep her aol screen-name, no problem, but using aol webmail she can't add active links to her signature. After quite awhile with an aol tech, they said I had to reload the aol software, change the signature to active links, then unload the aol software....YUK!!! I just hate putting that resource HOG back on, it is such a pain to remove all the files....oh well...that's AOL!

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

You need to go to keyword cancel AOL and in the lower left read where it says how to cancel. Once you cancel your account your e-mail is gone and if people try to e-mail you it will just bounce back. Since your AOL screen name is your e-mail address that name stays unused for like 6 months then after that it's free for someone else to use. That's how it used to be with the screen names but now that AOL is free I have no idea what happens when you close out screen names.

If you are trying to get rid of an aim name you use to get mail at aol.com then I have no clue about that.

Also if this is not the master screen name you want to close out then any secondary screen names can be deleted at keyword screen names and you will still have the master account in tact but no secondary accounts.

thanks, folks, but i'm not an AOL customer.

i just have an AOL free email account. i've had a hard time cancelling other email accounts, but eventually succeeded. i can't even find the email address or link to request it be done for this AOL Mail Account. i've looked and looked and looked (and done searches as well). nothing.

It doesn't have to be this difficult

For about 6 months now you didn't need to be a paying AOL member to get an address. You can sign up for a screen name through aim and then go to www.aol.com and log in with that and have AOL mail I guess. I don't know they have changed so much in the last 6 months. For a bit you could even surf the AOL message baords through AIM. I would think you just have to get rid of your AIM name to get rid of the e-mail.

With AOL being free now to broadband customers there is no tech support unless you pay for the $4.95 a month account so in that case I don't know what you do if you are on the free plan. I am on the free plan since I access through cable and I never use their call in tech support anyway as I get better help from other members on the rare occasion I need it.
