The icon relates to a sound card that was probably installed at one time. Your post would indicate that it has been uninstalled incorrectly.
Go to....Start....Control Panel....System...HardWare(tab)...Device Manager(Button). Open...Sound, Video and Games Controlers, right click on anything relating to CMI and select Uninstall.
Reboot and the icon should have gone.

If that doesn't work, do a search for *.cpl. on your C drive. This will display all your control panel icons. Look for one that is similar to cmi audio and rename it to .bak (in case u rename the wrong one, u can easily change it back to .cpl). One of them is DEFINATELY the icon u want to remove - u just gotta find which one !!

when you did a search for the .cpl file, did you make sure you searched all HIDDEN files and folders?

You can also use TweakUI to control what entries appear in the control panel.
It's tweaking section for the control panel has a bunch of checkboxes; just uncheck the appropriate entry to hide that "audio config" icon. Caveat: some entires correspond to multiple icons.
