I just installed XP Pro and I can only boot in safe mode (with or without network). When I try to boot normal, it freezes at the point where the logo is showing and the bar slides back and forth (bar stops sliding).
Is there a log file I can view that shows which service is causing it to fail? I am able to get to the internet and run Windows Updates. I have installed the critical updates.

Something to check:
Computer Seems to Stop Responding Before the Desktop Is Displayed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320560

That didn't do it. This is a fresh install. The file from that article doesn't exist. I'm also not able to hit CTL-ALT-DEL. The computer completely freezes. Thanks.
Is there a way to see what processes are starting?

Looks like a hardware problem. I took advice from a couple of other posts and removed all cards. Its now booting. I'm going to add them back one by one until I track down the issue.

Hi Ken , I am having the same problem with my computer I made a clean install of xp pro on this new computer I just built and it would only boot on safe mode I also get to the windows logo screen and the bar on the bottom that moves back and forth and it most of the time would keep moving but nothing would happen and sometimes the bar would stop moving. It is a hardware and driver problem.. but mostly a driver problem. I HALF solved my problem when I figured out that my on-board and audigy sound devices were both installed and I removed the audigy sound card and it booted about 5 times normal for me but my 6th boot got stuck at the screen again. now I am out of ideas. you mind telling me the specs of your computer so I can maybe have a solution for this problem that we both are having? I am kinda glad that I am not alone with this problem.
thanks
