What happens when you try the shutdown?

Hang up and live.

If this happens only once in a while, that's not unusual.
If it happens frequently, you have problems you need to fix.

If you have installed Windows from scratch, the ACPI features of the mboard - Standby, Hibernate, sometimes Turn off and Restart, may NOT work properly until AFTER you have installed the main chipset drivers for the mboard.

Holding the power button down or in until the computer shuts off doesn't physically damage the hard drive, but doing that may damage data on the hard drive.

When Windows freezes, usually this works fine .....

Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Del key, let go of all three keys.
Hold down Alt, press U, let go of both keys.
Press R for Restart, or U for Turn off - in both cases Windows will shut down normally.

It might be hanging while it waits for a program to close. Try UPHClean from MS - it fixes many shutdown issues. See here:

Worth having onboard anyway. The concept is integrated into later oprating systems.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

The PC will sometimes hang on shutdown if a USB device is left plugged in.
