Solved Can not log in as administrator:

January 11, 2014 at 21:06:57
Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4cpu 2.40 GHz
Sony Vaio PCV-RX850
Win XP ser pk 3 32 bit
Ver 2002

I downloaded a free program to partition C:/ & D:/ Giving C:/ more space. It was running so low on space.
The program did fine.
It came with two other programs:
Tuneup and a maintenance one. I used both.
After the scan it asked if I wanted it fixed and I clicked yes. It asked if I was sure . . .Yes.
I didn't know what all that stuff was. I just figured that if they were causing trouble then they should be fixed.
I also went to User Accounts. I wanted the computer to bypass the login and password. Just go straight to Windows.
Now. . . LOL. . . I can not log in as Administrator !
I've tried to do several things in my husbands account but it will not let me do anything because I am not the administrator there.
Is my only option is to purchase a refurbished HDD from EBay?

I know this is too big of a problem for anyone to actually solve for me. When I mess up, I really do it big time.
Also. . . this may help. . . I'm a great grandma. LOL
I try to do things by myself and of course can not.
by the way. . . what does "Tags," mean?

Thank you everyone that may read my dilemma. Oh. . . don't laugh too loud. LOL

Here are a few steps for starters, more ways are available if these are not successful. Tell us EXACTLY what happens if not.

Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and see if you get a Logon box.

Using Safe mode may be another way of regaining admin rights.
1. Log on as Administrator, or as a user with administrator permissions.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
3. In the left pane, expand the Local Users and Groups node, and then click Users.
4. In the right pane, double-click the Administrator account.
5. On the General tab, make sure the > Account is disabled check box is not ticked, and then click OK.
6. Quit the Computer Management console.
7. Reboot.

Hello Johnw,
I can't even get into "safe mode." I went to several sites to find out how for XP.
I've tried all the f1, f2, f3, f8 and the f10. None works.

I am using my laptop right now.
I think that the best thing I can do is purchase the "Restore Disk."
It is supposed to restore the computer back to its date of birth so to speak.
I know that after that (if it works), there will be hours of downloading updates.

Thank you for your help.

Another way is to borrow an XP CD that is the same version as yours, then use your product number.

Message: Hi JohnW,

I do have my product number for the XP. But I do not know anyone still using the computer.

All the people I know have gone over to those hand held devices. They are not serious computer users, just checking their mail and the usual that kids do these days.

I use mine for a lot of research and creative writing and photo manipulations.

My desk top is important to me.

I'm so glad that I purchased this old laptop from my neighbor. Or I wouldn't be able to try to fix my desk top pc.

As it is, this HP Pavilion dv5000 is for the pits. I will never purchase another HP. My printer is an HP too. No more HP's for me.

The keyboard on this is horrible.

As I type, I have to keep an eye on it. Most of the time the letter I am typing goes somewhere else on the page. I have to bring it back to the line I'm typing on! LOL

It's a pest because I'm a fast typest.

A lot of times I do not know where the cursor is and when I am able to see it on some other liine, the letters I have typed is putting letters into a word way up at the top.

My problem is not solved for my windows xp. It still states that I do not have administrator rights. So it will not let me do anything at all.

Run - Windows Repair, when you get to the final steps, check/tick all the boxes.

Copy and Paste the contents of the following log in your reply:

The only option you should have had was to either enter, remove or change the password. If you asked it remove the password and you are entering a password, perhaps that is the problem. Have you tried just hitting enter without a password on the admin account???

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!

Hello HopperRox,
Can not change the password because it does not recognize me as the adminstrator.
Everything I try to do it tells me that I do not have that authority.

Yes. . .I have just hit enter but it comes back at me telling me that I have forgotten my password.

I found a neighbor that has an old Windows XP as JohnW had suggested and I will try all of it tomorrow.
Thank you

I found a neighbor, the one that sold me this laptop. She loaned me her old Windows XP. She said that it may an older version of Windows XP.
I do not know what she means. Though I will try it
tomorrow. After a hard day plus trying to get this problem solved I'm pooped. Iol.

I like what you have in your next post to me. Interesting. About going to those places and tweaking. But that's how I got into this mess in the first place. . .lol.
Though I did it with those 2 programs that came with the partition program.
it's still on my computer because I do not have the authority to either use them or delete them.
I also sent for "Operating System Repair For All Windows Computers bootable CD
I also sent for the Restore Disk, at
Now with the borrowed Windows XP and the others I sent for, hope I can get up and running.
I know I will need help trying to get into the Bios. I have tried so many times to get into Safe Mode and can not do that either.

Hi JohnW,
I installed the Win XP I borrowed but it would not let me put in my own produt #, so I had to use hers (the product number that came with her WinXP) Now I feel as though I have pirated my installation. LOL.
I suppose the only thing I can do is to ask her to let me purchase it from her. Now that is a down for me as I wanted to ask if my pc could handle Vista or what. I would then need to purchase that OS.
Everything seems fine with the installation of this WinXP. But all the fonts, the hours glass and the arrow pointer is way too big. I do not know how to size it down.

What can I do JohnW.

Need a screenshot of Device Manager please.

How to take a SS ( screenshot ) XP

How to attach to your reply.

Vista is no longer available.
Windows 7 is the next possible, I see you have 1.46GB RAM which is the Max for your comp. That is not enough for W7.

Hi JohnW,
About an hour ago I posted here (somewhere here. . . "ask a question.") about what do I need to do to install the next good Windows.

Would my pc tower handle me taking out stuff and putting in new stuff?
I know first on my list would be a new fan for both, this pc tower and my laptop. just in case. . . since they are so very old.

I have replaced things in the tower in this and my other past computers. I think I can still do those things. But I don't know what to buy and how much of those GB stuff I need. LOL. ROFL.
Of course I would have to purchase them one by one as time goes by and then opening up the tower to replace the stuff. . . after I get them all together.

Thanks JohnW

Wow. . . that was neat! One place said that it could not be done in XP. Ha, ha.

Oh darn! I completed the divice manager area and have been trying to put it here.
The attach screen share and begin process does nothing.
I did the copy and when I came here to paste, the paste would not light up for me to click on.
I don't know any other way do bring it here.
