Anytime i tried to connect to any ms site i get a message that says "the website you are trying to connect to is currently unavailable or you need to adjust yor browser or settings." Funny enough i can connect to other websites easilly.I have winxp pro and Sp1 fully installed. Any advice will be highly appreciated. TIA

1-go to tools in IE
2-select internet options
3-select the connections tab
4-click then LAN settings button
5-make sure the "autimatically detect settings" is unchecked along with the "use automatic configuration script"

Once both of those boxes are unchecked, restart IE and go ahead with the updates, the problem is now resolved.

Note: After installation you may want to consider rechecking the "automatically detect settings" box to increase your internet surfing. It increases browsing speed because your comp will search through your ISP provider's cache and use it before downloading the actual sites information. Any questions and/or comments are welcomed.

WINUP: Blank Page When You Try to Access Windows Update
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows Update, when used with:
the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
This article was previously published under Q193701
SYMPTOMS
When you try to access the Windows Update Web site, you may receive a blank page.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if any of the following conditions is true:
The Visual Basic Scripting Support (VBScript) component did not install correctly on Internet Explorer 4.0 or became corrupted after the installation.
Security or Internet acceleration software, such as AtGuard by WRQ or Trend Micro's PC-cillin by Trend Micro, may prevent the page from displaying correctly.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps in the order they appear:
Install a new Scripting Engine. To do so, follow these steps:
Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0A8A18F6-249C-4A72-BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en

Click the x86 link next to your language of Internet Explorer.
At the bottom of the page, download the file for your operating system.
Click Run this program from its current location to download and install the update.
After the installation is complete, restart your computer to go back to the Windows Update Web site.
Register the DLL files that are associated with the Windows Update Web site and clear the browser's cache and history.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\vbscript.dll

Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\mshtml.dll

Click View, and then click Internet Options.
Click the General tab
In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.
In the History section, click Clear History.
Disable your antivirus software before you visit the Windows Update Web site.
Click OK.
Disable or close all security and Internet acceleration software. To do so, use any of the following methods:
Right-click the icon in the notification area (by default, located on the right side of the Windows Task Bar) that represents the program, and then click Disable, Close, or Exit.
Press the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys at the same time on your keyboard to bring up the Close Program dialog box. Select the program that you want to close, and then click End Task. Repeat this method for each security or Internet acceleration program, and then click Cancel to close the Close Program dialog box.
Contact the vendor of the software or visit their Web site for additional information about disabling or closing the program.
MORE INFORMATION
If you still cannot view or download components, you can submit a support request online. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

See if you have a "hosts" file in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
A hosts file is used for ad blocking. Spybot will also create one which will block certain sites. You can open it with notepad and edit out any MS sites, or just rename it to hosts.old, and it won't block sites anymore.

Hi,

MS Sites do require you to have given various Active-x permissions in your browser security settings. One way to get usable settings is to go to (in IE) Tools>Options, click on the 'security' tab, for the zone highlight "Internet" and push the "default settings button".

Close IE, reopen it and try MS sites again.

By the way, although someone advised you above that you don't need "Automatically detect settings" checked on your IE 'connections' tab, I was unable to get Update to run without closing in error without having that setting active.
