Comment:

All of a sudden, I can not access one particular web site on any browser. I have them all.

The site is www.ssa.gov

Simple site for Social Security Admin. I have changed nothing on this computer. I run McAfee Internet Suite 7.0, also have Webroot SpySweeper on here. I have always had these programs and nothing has been changed.

One day I can get into this site, the next no way. I just received the stardard screen back telling me 'oops we can't access the website you entered' etc.

Open to any suggestions.

Well, that site is up. I just accessed it. Your security settings may be blocking access.

It's up with mine too. Try ...

http://ssa.gov/

or

www.socialsecurity.gov

P.S. don't ask me why SSA has three different point of entry to the same home page. BTW a new bill to outlaw cybersquatting federal & local government websites (and maybe any registered websites) are now pending in the U.S. Congress.

'oops we can't access the website you entered' etc

The wordings are wholly new to me. What browser are you using?

I have tried the following and still can not get into this site:

www.ssa.gov
www.socialsecurity.gov
http://ssa.gov
https://ssa.gov

I have used IE7, Maxthon, Avant, Firefox and K-Meleon.

I will reemphasize, it is this site and this site only that I can not enter and only on this computer. Used a friend's yesterday, no problem. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

All my security settings have been checked and rechecked, nothing has ever been changed on here.

I think you may mean "to my knowledge". Logic would dictate that IF this site is accessable from other computers and used to be accessable from yours, that something has changed. Do you have auto updates enabled?

Updates are enabled, always have been. Get them with no problem.

In that case it is possible that some update may have changed your security settings. Just speculation. Additionally, many users have cited problems when using IE7. You should be able to allow an exception to your settings to allow that site to load.

A shot in the dark - add those sites to the Trusted Sites via Internet Options. See what happen?

All variations of the site in any format are listed in my trusted sites. Can I go back to IE6?

Don't use it much anyway. Almost always Avant or Maxthon.

You should be able to uninstall IE7 via the control panel add/ remove programs.
Another shot in the dark. Is it possible some program on your computer is blocking that site. There are many spyware/ malware utilities out there and some allow you to block certain sites. Even though you have multiple names for the site I think they all lead back to a single address. Take a look at IE tools> security> restraicted sites.

Not on the 'restricted sites' list either.

Don't use IE7 so I don't know if there is a repair option or if it would help. With the negative comments on this site and elsewhere concerning IE7 I haven't migrated to it as of yet. You could try a repair if it is available. Under control panel> add/ remove programs select IE7 you MAY get one choice to remove or more than one, including an option to repair.
Due to the fact that you say you can't access that site with ANY browser I tend to think there is something on your machine that is blocking it. Do you have it bookmarked or saved as a favorite? If so, try removing that entry.

check the "HOSTS" file. Open windows explorer and look under C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. Be sure to enable viewing hidden and system files. Open this file with Notepad.
