can not access C: drive

My computer recently became infested with pop-ups and automatic shut downs, I purchased a "pc technician" virus remover cd to alleviate these problems. (also did free downloads of AdAware and Spybot) Since I put the disc in the drive my computer has been somewhat better, not completely better.. My major problem is that I cannot open my C: drive. I go to my computer and it says "report error" (I am running Windows XP) Any advice for this novice? much appreciated.
