I read somewhere a while ago about running windows XP from the cd rom. I think they called it something like ghosting. i was wondering if this was possible and if so how would i do it?

In a word, full version of XP, no way from a CD. Ghosting refers to creating an exact image of a partition or drive for the purpose of restoring that partition, should the need arise.

You cannot run XP from a CD. During the boot process XP needs to write to the registry and page file. It can't do that with a CD.
The nearest you will Get to it is Bart PE which is a severely cut down version of XP and if only designed for trouble shooting purposed.

You'd have to explain a bit more.
The newer Ghost program is booted by a CD. It is window PE.
You can make a similar disk with Barts or ubcd4win (uses barts). It is sort of a live CD. Not much real use other than to repair a true installation but fun to play with.
The new Vista dvd's are the PE 2.x and can run systems from the dvd also.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

To add a little to Othehill's response #2. Ghost is one of the programs that create an image of a partition or drive. Another popular imaging program is Acronis. An imaging program is a 'great' safeguard.

Hmmm... Repair. Novel concept, that. Go figure.
I bet, if one wants to waste time "playing at some fun stuff", one could probably even revover/backup some data... - what a hoot of FUN!

The original poster didn't indicate he wished to repair systems.
He requested information about a live cd as I understand it. Even that is not fully clear to me. He may be asking about a Ghost disk.
