Hi, My friend wants me to do a fresh install on his PC. The product number on his is good because he has access to all M$ products. He doesn't have a CD, but I have mine with a different product number (to use for a fresh install...same XP Pro SP2.)

Just wondering if his WPA #'s will automatically register his PC as well of course using his Product number.
Thanks

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

It used to work that way, but not since Microsoft has changed their policies. It seems you need the exact CD and the key that goes with it. At least I can no longer get it to work.

You should have no problem installing XP using your CD & his product key. But there *may* be a problem activating it. You can try calling in to M$ & explaining the situation...supposedly they will ask you a series of questions to help determine whether you have a legit claim or not. If they turn you down, there are ways around activation IF you are so inclined to use them ;-)

Thanks for all the answers, I sure appreciate them. I might just try to repair the OS so I put a new post in Security to see if I can get things going right. I really don't have the time through these holidays to do too much, hopefully Jabuck can give ne some insight in the other forum as I have the PC running but it's really slow.
Thanks again.

AFAIK, XP keys are not tied to the individual discs that they are distributed with - same goes for Restore CDs obtained via VAR systems & OEM sourced XP discs.

And therefore, if you both own retail & legal copies of the (similar flavor) XP OS, there shouldn't be a problem installing or activating your friends copy - even if the installation media was yours, unless his product key has been abused, and this would still happen even if he deployed the installation via his own disc.

If you just do a repair install, you can save a copy of wpa.dbl and then paste it back into system32 after the repair and you won't be asked to activate.

XP keys are not tied to the individual discs that they are distributed with

That's exactly right.

I know that used to be the case, but with their "Genuine advantage" program things have changed. I haven't had any success using the same exact XP disk on a different computer using the serial pasted on the side of the case. I can load Windows, but it won't activate.

You used to be able to call, get a real person and talk them into a 52 digit "activation" code to type in while they had you on the phone. Just this week, I can no longer get a real person. I get the automated voice asking for the ID key and if it's not "recognized" the voice says "please contact your retailer and call back when you get the problem resolved".

Maybe it's just my bad luck that the copies of XP I've tried to use with customer's serial numbers just didn't match or they've activated too many times in the past.

At this point, I usually use the "other" option.

I think jellybean can change the key after the install.
Or try nlite using your disk with his key.
