My Toshiba Equium laptop has no serial port. I use a USB/serial adaptor.
This calls the serial port COM6 but my sofware only goes up to COM4.
Can I change it ?
Cheers

If you have windows XP Professional you can change it there.
I would be nice to change it in the bios but labtops bios’s are limited.
also check the USB to serial device. It may have switches on it to change
the com ports. I’m using a USB to serial adapter for my telescope. It has the
switches inside it. It came factory set on com 2. There is not option for com 1.
So I set it for com 3, and in windows I set it to com 1. It works.
Good luck.

You can't - because XP does not recognize any COM ports except for the LPT port for the printer. Enable com port in BIOS and reboot. Now XP will have serial port available with the following effects:
1. Mouse Pointer Moves Erratically or Does Not Respond with XP .
2. Netware : Poor Performance with File and Print Services for NetWare
3. My Network Places is now more vulnerable.

Hey buddy the poster has no com ports on the laptop to enable :0
You would change settings in Device Manager. You MAY be able to uncheck use automatic settings so you can change the com port number.
Note: if you have a builtin modem for dialup you can disable it in the bios and it may free com2 up for your usb device.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

By default XP assigns COM1 & 2 to Standard Serial Ports and 3 to 5 to Modems.
You need a different type of Serial Adapter which allows for assigning the Com Port IRQ etcetc you require:

"Thanks, where in XP Pro would I change it ?"
If you have a Com port show up under Ports (Com and LPT) in Device Manager
double click on the Com port, select Resources.
If that's not where it shows up, click on the USB to Serial port device's entry, and select Resources.
If the selection Use Automatic settings is not greyed out, click on the box to the left of that to remove the checkmark, in the box to the right of the Setting based on: line, click on the down arrow to select a Basic configuration.
For a normal Com port select 0000 for Com 1 (3F8, IRQ 4, or configuration 0001 for Com 2 (2F8, IRQ3), or configuration 0002 for Com 3 (3E8, IRQ 4), or configuration 0003 for Com 4 (2E8, IRQ 3).
If that's not what you see, select the configuration # that has the appropriate resources.

Thanks for help all... but no joy.
Without the sub/serial plugged in there are no ports shown.
With it plugged in com6 and com 7 come up but there's nothing can be changed on
anything to do with them.
No resources, nothing can be changed.

If the selection Use Automatic settings IS greyed out, there's nothing you can do, but if the selection Use Automatic settings is NOT greyed out, when you click on the box to the left of that to remove the checkmark, in the box to the right of the Setting based on: line, you will NOT be able to change to anything if you leave it set to Current configuration - click on the down arrow to select a Basic configuration, first.
If you can't do anything like that, what software is it that you have that requires any of Com 1 to Com 4?
