Specs: Windows XP
I recenly got a new pc and, Like my old one, I want to use XP with it. I want to start fresh with no data. So can I install xp on the new HDD using the recovery disk of the old computer?

What I was thinking was if I plugged the new HDD into the old computer and ran the recovery disk I could then just put that HDD in the new computer and all the drivers would automatically reinstall. will this work??

No you can't. The old computer and the new one have different hardware.

If the recovery disk is from a pre-configured OEM computer the version of WinXP is keyed to the original hardware.

Anyway, there may not even WinXP be drivers available for some of the hardware in the new computer. I suggest you learn how to use Windows 7.

WinXP is on limited support from Microsoft.

✔ Best Answer
Original Equipment Manufacturer. Companies like Dell, Acer, Gateway, etc. that sell computers with Windows pre-installed. Those versions of Windows are limited licenses. Legally only good to use on the computer it came on. Usually they will not install on another computer or if they will, you will need a retail installation key, which you wouldn't have.
